Identify the physical arrangement
A keyboard's language label describes more than the letters printed on a few keys. Enter, Shift and punctuation positions can differ between layouts, and compact notebooks may move navigation keys as well. Before buying an imported computer, look at a clear photograph of the actual keyboard. A generic product image may show a different regional version.
Think about the characters you type most often. German text, programming symbols and spreadsheet entry place different demands on the layout. An unfamiliar position for a frequently used symbol can matter more than a small difference in key travel. Try a paragraph and a few typical commands rather than judging the keyboard from appearance alone.
Software and keycaps are separate
The operating system's selected layout determines what a key press produces. Changing that setting can make an imported keyboard usable, but it does not change the printed legends or physical shape of the keys. Stickers can help identify characters without solving a different Enter key or a missing dedicated key. Decide whether that compromise is acceptable before purchasing.
An unexpected layout switch
If several layouts are installed, learn how to recognise and change the active one. An accidental switch can make punctuation appear wrong even when the hardware is working normally. Check the selected layout before replacing a keyboard or assuming that an application has corrupted text. Password entry deserves particular care when the visible characters are concealed.
Check the smaller decisions
Function keys may default to media controls, and the behaviour can depend on a firmware or manufacturer setting. Home, End and Page Up may require combinations on a compact keyboard. If these are central to your work, test them directly. A number pad is useful for some users but also changes the width and position of the main typing area.
For an external keyboard, verify operating-system support and any required configuration software. Basic typing may work while special keys behave differently. Keep a note of the layout name and settings on a shared computer so another user can restore their preference. A familiar arrangement is a legitimate purchase criterion; it need not be sacrificed merely to obtain a slightly thinner device.
