When a higher refresh rate matters

Verify the active refresh rate over the actual cable rather than relying on the monitor's advertised maximum.

A capability is not always the selected setting

A monitor capable of a high refresh rate may initially operate at a lower setting. Check the active rate in the operating system with the intended display selected. Then compare it with the monitor's supported modes for that input. The maximum printed in advertising may depend on a particular resolution, connection or configuration.

Refresh rate describes how often the screen can update. It is different from the frame rate produced by an application and from pixel response behaviour. A high setting does not make a slow game produce more frames, and a single response-time claim does not describe every aspect of motion. Keep these measurements separate when comparing products.

The connection can be the limit

Look at the computer output, cable, adapter and dock as a chain. A direct connection may support a mode that is unavailable through a particular dock. If the expected option is missing, test a documented suitable cable directly before replacing the monitor. Changing several pieces at once makes the successful result harder to explain.

Check whether selecting a higher refresh rate changes the resolution or another display setting. Windows may offer combinations rather than an independent maximum for every parameter. Read the resulting configuration after applying it. The goal is the combination you want, not simply the highest number available in one menu.

Compare with your own movement

Scroll a long document, move windows and, if relevant, use a familiar game. Decide whether the difference matters at your normal viewing distance. A smoother desktop can be pleasant even outside gaming, but it does not outweigh every other consideration such as text clarity, stand adjustment or screen size.

For a laptop, consider battery behaviour when using different supported display modes. If the manufacturer provides dynamic or adaptive options, read what they do on that model. Avoid assuming that a setting with a similar name behaves identically across computers. Once the arrangement works, record the chosen resolution and rate so that a later cable swap or settings reset can be checked against something concrete.
