Inspect the movement and surrounding enclosure
A laptop hinge should move the lid without separating the surrounding case. If the bezel lifts, the base flexes unusually or a screw area begins to open, stop treating it as ordinary stiffness. Repeatedly opening the computer can turn a small mounting problem into damage to the display cable or enclosure. Record where the movement occurs before arranging inspection.
Open the lid from near the centre with the base supported, following the design of the machine. Twisting one corner puts a different load on the assembly. This does not mean every hinge failure is caused by handling; wear, mounting damage and other faults can also be involved. The useful question is what part needs repair, not whether more force will overcome it.
An opening case is not always a hinge problem. Battery swelling can lift a keyboard, touchpad or bottom cover. If the body is bulging or distorted, follow the manufacturer's battery guidance and stop using the affected device. Do not push the panels together or tighten screws to hide the gap. That can make a different problem more dangerous.
For a suspected hinge fault, photograph the condition and note whether the lid holds its position. Check warranty or service options before applying glue or dismantling the screen. Adhesive can obscure the damage and complicate replacement. A technician may need to inspect the hinge, its mounts and adjacent cable routing rather than replace only the visible metal part.
Plan around the repair
Back up important files while the computer can be used safely, without repeatedly moving the damaged lid. Ask the repair provider which parts are included in the estimate and whether the display assembly or base needs replacement. A low-cost hinge part can still involve substantial labour or enclosure work.
On a used laptop, test the lid gently through its normal range and inspect the case around both hinges. Do not deliberately stress it to prove strength. Uneven gaps, cracking sounds or a lid that falls under its own weight deserve questions before purchase. A screen that lights up correctly is only one part of a healthy portable computer; the mechanical structure has to survive daily use as well.
