Establish what has actually stopped
One website fails to load and it appears that the internet is down. Try a second, unrelated site first. If only one service is affected, the problem may be there. An inaccessible mail account and a general connection failure are different situations. Record the exact message before closing the browser or changing settings.
Next, try another device on the same network if one is available. If it works, focus first on the original device or its connection. If both fail, shared parts of the route become more relevant. This comparison can prevent unnecessary router changes when only one laptop has lost Wi-Fi.
Separate the local network from internet access
A wireless connection to the router does not guarantee that the router can reach the internet. Conversely, the internet line can work while Wi-Fi is unreliable in one location. Interpret router indicators using the model's instructions and inspect its status page where appropriate. A red or flashing light does not mean the same thing on every device.
If a direct Ethernet connection is available, compare it using a known working cable and a suitable local port. Do not simultaneously replace DNS settings or install a driver. A comparison is useful only when you know what changed between attempts.
A separate mobile connection can show whether a service is reachable outside the home connection. Keep the test small and consider the allowance. A page working over mobile data does not identify the responsible component at home; it simply narrows the affected route.
Check the provider's information
Use a working alternative connection to read the provider's outage information. A reported regional issue can explain why several devices fail together. The absence of a notice does not exclude a provider problem. For support, the appropriate connection identifier through the intended contact channel, the time and observed indicators are more useful than a series of random repair attempts.
An ordinary router restart may be appropriate under the manufacturer's guidance, but it interrupts telephone services and other users too. A factory reset is a different operation and should not be the automatic next step. It can remove credentials and custom settings without repairing a fault outside the home.
Check unfinished work afterwards
Once access returns, retry the original task. One page loading again does not prove that an interrupted upload arrived in full. Check important transfers at their destination and look for conflicts if several devices edited the same files while offline.
For recurring outages, keep a short factual record: time, affected devices, wired or wireless connection and duration. Note whether the router's status changed. A pattern makes further investigation considerably easier. Continually trying new settings while forgetting the previous values makes an intermittent problem harder to understand.
A small comparison table is enough
For a recurring fault, record three trials side by side: the laptop on Wi-Fi, another device on that Wi-Fi and, where available, the laptop on Ethernet. Note whether a fresh page loaded in each case. An already playing video or previously loaded text is not reliable evidence of a connection working at that moment. Use the same non-sensitive destinations at roughly comparable times so that a fault resolving in the meantime does not confuse the comparison.
If only one browser fails, first compare its behaviour with another non-sensitive site. An extension or a connection setting may affect that program alone. Another application working does not exclude every fault either: it may have an established connection or be displaying stored content. Record exactly what you counted as a successful result.
If support needs a screenshot, limit it to the relevant message. Hide personal messages, saved access details and unrelated information. A precise description with a few targeted observations is usually easier to interpret than an entire desktop full of applications. Keep track of configuration changes so the previous state can be restored after the investigation.
