Reading laptop battery-life claims

Compare the test conditions and current battery condition before relying on a runtime figure.

Compare like with like

A quoted battery runtime is meaningful only alongside the test that produced it. Local video playback, a video meeting and a demanding game impose different loads. Brightness, wireless activity, background applications and power settings also change the result. Use the advertised figure as a description of a particular test, not a promise for every working day.

Write down a realistic unplugged session: perhaps two hours of documents, an hour of calls and some browsing between them. Look for measurements that resemble this mixture, and leave room for variation. A machine that just reaches the required duration when new offers little flexibility for an unexpectedly long meeting or a battery that has aged.

Capacity and condition answer different questions

Battery capacity describes stored energy, while runtime also depends on how quickly the computer uses it. A larger capacity does not automatically beat a smaller one in a more economical machine. On a used laptop, ask about battery condition as well as the original specification. A report or diagnostic result is more informative than a seller saying the battery is fine.

Inspect the case for abnormal lifting or distortion. A swollen battery is not a normal sign of ageing to work around with tape or extra pressure. Stop using an affected device and follow the manufacturer's handling guidance. Do not press a distorted case back into shape or attempt to puncture the battery. Replacement arrangements matter when evaluating a second-hand machine.

Make your own baseline

After setting up a laptop, run a normal session at a consistent brightness and note the starting and finishing charge. Repeat it without installing several updates in the middle. This gives you a useful personal baseline, even though the percentage indicator is an estimate rather than a laboratory instrument. Compare later changes against a similar workload.

If runtime falls suddenly, check for newly active background work, a changed power mode or an application keeping the processor busy. Do not assume the battery has deteriorated overnight. For travel, carry a compatible charger and confirm available charging opportunities instead of planning around the last few percent. A smaller, repeatable unplugged workload is easier to manage than an optimistic headline figure.
